My prayer lately...

The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.
Isaiah 51:3

It's a new (hair) day.

I took Sam and Gabe today to get their hairs trimmed up a bit. Gabe has had long hair from the time his hair was long enough to be long. I've taken him in a few times to get a cut, but I usually do it myself. I found a new girl this past year for myself and have started taken the boys to her. She has become a friend and one thing I love about her is her honesty. While we were growing Sam's hair out, I brought him in for a clean up and she told me it didn't need to be cut, she said she would do it, but that if I wanted to grow it out, we needed to wait. So we waited. This afternoon, when we walked in and she saw Gabe, she gave me a look and told me it was time. This is the longest his hair has ever been, and I even cut some off the length a few weeks ago. I knew it was time for a shorter, less "she's so cute" cut, so we went for it. I'm still feeling a little sick about it, but I think I like it. It's good to see a little more of that sweet face looking at me. I loved his long hair. Maybe I liked it too much, maybe I had fun playing with it and maybe I pulled a straighter through it every once in a while...maybe. I'll probably let it grow out again, but for now, it's fun to have a little change. Here he is sporting a lot less hair than the pictures below in his birthday post.
Sam, on the other hand, has had short hair for years. We started the growing out process in the fall and have almost reached a point where we really like it. He has even started mastering the hair toss when it gets in his eyes...such a little dude. She just cleaned it up in the back and thinned it out a little bit...this kid has got some hair.

You'd think I had girls with the way I'm going on and on about their hair!

Happy Birthday Gabe!

Gabe's 4th birthday was yesterday, so we have been in full celebration mode this weekend. We had his big birthday bash Friday evening with 23 of his closest friends. We had his party in the indoor playground at his school. He had such a good time and felt very special. On Sunday, we had our traditional birthday breakfast at Krispy Kreme, where my camera battery died on me, so we will have to just remember that memory in our heads. We came home and opened more presents from family. Whenever anyone would tell him "Happy Birthday" he would always reply sweetly, "Happy Birthday to you too"!
We have been blessed with 4 sweet, joy-filled years with our little Gabe. He came into this world quickly, much to our surprise, on a snowy (ish) day in 2005. It was fitting that we woke up on his 4th birthday to a blanket of snow in Nashville. Not that Gabe went out and played in the snow. He is my warm weather lovin' kid. He loves to wear his flip-flops around the house and talks everyday about when it will be warm enough to go swimming. I like to think that even though he was born in Nashville, he's got a little Texas in his blood.
Happy Birthday Punkin Noodle Head. We love you!

He wrote a note

One of Sam and Gabe's favorite things to do is play with their Legos. They will spend hours building space ships and boats. Then they line them up in their room like this...

Now, keep in mind, these are only a few of them. They are everywhere upstairs. While I was up there last night cleaning, I noticed a broken space ship under the couch. I picked up all the pieces and threw it in the Lego box and went on my merry way. This morning, Sam found the broken space ship and came down to my room demanding to know why I had broken it. He was so upset that his precious space ship was broken and just couldn't understand why I had put it away (where it belonged, but that's beside the point). I explained to him that it was already broken and that I found it under the couch. That didn't make him feel any better and he left the room sulking. I assumed that he had gone back upstairs to fix it. When I came out into the Living Room, I was surprised to see him at the kitchen table, drawing. I noticed that he was still sulking and asked him what he was doing. He did not reply to my question, instead, he got up out of his chair and handed me the piece of paper he had been drawing on. This is what was on it...
For those of you who do not read at the Kindergarten level, it says - "I do not like to break my Legos". I about died when I read it and then looked at his sweet face and realized that he really was upset about his broken ship. I hugged him and promised that I would never put away a broken ship again without showing it to him first and then thanked him profusely for writing me a note to let me know how he really felt. It was so sweet, I've been thinking about it all day. I'm so glad he found a constructive way to voice his feelings. I am also grateful that he was so diplomatic in the wording of the note (so like his Daddy), you'll notice he did not say "I do not like it when YOU break my Legos".
That's probably what my note would have said.

A Picture Update

This is Gabe and his friend Mitch playing outside on one of the very few nice days we've had this month. He is actually wearing a short sleeved shirt! Yes, the short sleeved shirt also happens to be part of his pj/playing outside ensemble. My little Gabe will be 4 in about a week. He has been talking non stop about his birthday party. I might have gone a little overboard on the amount of kids I invited. I want so much for him to feel special and celebrated on his special day. Luckily, the place we are having it has a lot of room and does not charge per kid! I'll be making a lot of cupcakes..."with white icing, sprinkles and plastic Batman rings".
Here is a picture of my little runaway. This is the view I see most of Luke whenever we are not in an enclosed space. He takes off and doesn't look back, thank you very much. No fear, this one. I think I will be planning play dates in locations with fences and walls involved, otherwise, I'll constantly be chasing after this cutie. The pool should be interesting this summer...

Nicole and I took all the boys to the Discovery Center. It was so much fun, but not many walls and fences! Here is one face shot I got of Luke, when he wasn't taking off to places unknown.
Here are Sam and Gabe at The Discovery Center. They really do love each other. Although, my little 6 year old is starting to think he knows a whole lot more than he really does! He's getting a tad bit bossy, but Gabe doesn't seem to mind, yet. I was looking through pictures from the past month, trying to decide what to blog with and I realized there are precious few of Sam. Seems like he is always at school when I pull the camera out. His favorite thing these days is playing in the woods behind our house with his friends. They have quite a spread of forts out there, it's a little boys paradise. He comes home with dirt in his hair and in his pockets, begging to stay out just a little bit longer. The freezing cold doesn't even seem to bother him.
I just finished reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It was so good! I can't believe I've never read it before. Neal has been traveling a lot, so I've been in survival mode, which means lots of "snacky dinners", play dates and early bedtime. I keep telling myself when the weather gets nicer I'll come out of hibernation and get the motivation to clean my house, organize the garage, do some painting projects, blog more, go on walks...but right now, I'm content to cuddle up on the couch with my warm blanket and a good book!

The Funniest Show Ever...

This show is genius. Hysterical. Laugh out loud funny. I love it!
Did you all watch tonight's episode? What was your favorite part?
