Randomness

This is my favorite way to post...throwing all my random thoughts together into one random post...

*Who is excited that we are finally getting new episodes of our favorite TV shows???? Neal and I have been enjoying The Office and 30 Rock the past two weeks. I just saw a commercial telling me that Grey's is back this Thursday. Even though it was bugging me when the strike started, I am still excited to watch it again every week.

*The boys and I went to the park today with Nicole and her boys. It was a b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l day to be at the park. It was 70 and I actually got a sunburn! I'm so excited Spring is here and we are finally getting some good weather.

*I'm 31. Weird.

*I have three boys. Even weirder.

*I'm registering Sam for Kindergarten tomorrow. Yikes.

*I walked through my new house for the first time yesterday and got really excited about it. I'd been reserving my excitement, but couldn't hold it in any longer.

*We went on Friday to pick out everything. Kitchen cabinets (cream with an antique-y glaze), counter tops (black granite), pulls and knobs, carpet, light fixtures, bathroom tile, hardwoods, paint color (Moody Brown), all the outside stuff. It was a little overwhelming, but mostly fun. We've got a few changes to make after having the weekend to think over some of it.

*Sam and Gabe want to help build the house. They said they could bring their hammers to hit the nails. We probably won't take them up on that offer!

*I'm going to re-familiarize myself with The Baby Whisperer tonight. It's time to get Luke on a better schedule during the day. I keep telling myself that I need to stay home for a few days in a row and be really strict about his naps. I'm finding it's near impossible to stay home for a few days in a row with a 5 year old and a 3 year old, unless I just want to go crazy. I really don't. At least not more than I already am.

*Any tips out there on fitting a third baby into life on the go with older siblings?

That's all for now...

April

Is anyone else's April as crazy as mine? It seems like everyone is having birthdays and babies this month. I have 3 baby showers and at least 5 birthdays to celebrate through out the month. This is one of my favorite months, since one of those 5 birthdays to celebrate is mine! I also love the beginning of Spring. The weather is finally warming up here, the flowers and trees are blooming so we are all sneezing and taking our allergy medication religiously so we can go outside and play.

Forget it

Sorry friends...I've given up on trying to get videos on here, for the time being. I spent WAY too much time on the computer yesterday, trying to figure it all out. I actually edited a few clips from Gabe's birthday party and tried to get them on here. My computer did not like that, and told me that I didn't have enough space to save it...I've got to do some computer spring cleaning! When I felt like throwing my computer across the room, I decided that I needed to give up on the video thing for awhile. I already spend so much time messing around with photos, I just can't add something else to spend time on! At some point, I'll work on opening up some more room on my computer, I do want to figure it out, but until then, you'll have to suffer through pictures instead of videos!

I know that you are all sorely disappointed! :)

Randomness

*Have you ever had Starburst Jellybeans? They only come around at Easter time and they are the best! The original ones are good, but the sour ones are my favorite. You can also buy a whole bag of the reds and pinks! If you haven't tried them, grab a bag next time you are at Target. Do it quick though, because they will stop selling them soon.

*I mentioned in one of the posts about Kandice that she had done my laundry for me, with Callie's help too! My washer broke last week and I had to wait until yesterday for the Sears guy to come revive it. $180 later it's working; that was money well spent. I have SO much laundry piled up, even with Kandice and Callie doing 2 loads for me this weekend. So, today has been a laundry day. I'm on my 4th load. I don't think my laundry volume is going to get any better either. With 4 boys in the house, it can only get worse. Especially when the 3 little ones start playing sports and getting stinky(er)!

*Sam and Gabe are playing soccer for the first time in April and May. We signed them up with a league at their school that only has a two month season. They have never played before, so it will be fun to see if either of them gets into it.

*Callie(Kandice's mom) has been in town this weekend and she offered to watch Sam and Gabe Sunday night so Neal and I (and Luke) could go out. We took her up on that offer and went to Carabas for dinner. I love Carabas...bread, Ceaser Salad, and Chicken Marsala with Garlic Mashed Potatoes..yummy! Then we went to Borders and hung out there for a while. Sam and Gabe were going to spend the night with Callie, but we got a call from her at 10 (yes, we were home by 10...we were home by 9) saying that they wanted to come home (Kandice lives a house away). Turns out, they had just finished their 4th (!) movie and Callie told them they couldn't watch another one and that it was time to go to sleep. She is so mean, only letting them watch FOUR movies! They had a blast with Callie and Eli and have wanted to go back to hang out with her every day! Thanks for the night out Callie! We love it when you come to town!

*I'm on a diet. Trying to lose that baby weight. After a year and a half being pregnant (2 miscarriages in there, I wasn't pg with Luke for a year and a half!), I'm ready to have my body back to normal. I've cut out all soft drinks and have been really good about not eating too much sugar...except for those jellybeans! I've already lost 4 whole pounds but I've still got a ways to go before I can fit in all my cute Spring clothes. I'm starting a serious exercise regime with my friend Stacey in a week...I'll let you know how that goes. I hate exercising!

*Luke has excema (at least I think that's what it is) all over his little face. We go to the Dr. tomorrow for his 2 month visit. I'm curious to see what he says about it and to see how much he weighs. He has really started smiling a lot these past few days. It's so sweet. He is doing really good sleeping, he went from 11:30 last night to 7 this morning without eating. He woke up at 3, but I just gave him his paci and he went right back to sleep! Yay! I'm hoping he will keep that up. Thanks in part to the Miracle Blanket from Nicole.

*I met Nicole at Target, in one of the toy aisles. Her son Mitch is 2 months younger than Gabe. We started chatting, realized we lived in the same neighborhood and exchanged phone numbers. We've became fast friends and always laugh about how Target brought us together. She has since moved out of the neighborhood, but is still only 10 minutes away.

*My parents are coming in this weekend for Easter. I'm so excited to have them here and for them to see how much Luke has grown.

*Sam and Gabe are on Spring Break this week, so I'm trying to plan some fun stuff to do. We went to the park yesterday afternoon with some friends. I wanted to take them to see Horton Hears A Who, but Sam said he didn't want to go see it in the theater because it was too loud...okay. Has anyone seen it? Should I take him anyway? We are going to our new favorite little indoor playgroud called The Monkey's Treehouse on Friday and, if the weather is nice, will probably spend some more time outside at the park.

*Time for more laundry.

Luke

Here are some new pictures of Luke. He will be 8 weeks on Monday. He is such a little sweetie...he is starting to smile and really make eye contact, which is always so fun. I can stare at him for hours...even the back of his head is cute!

It's a sad day...

Football will never be the same again. Brett Favre retired today after 17 years playing football. Neal and I are huge Green Bay Packer fans, it will be really weird to watch a game with out seeing #4 throwing touchdown passes. I'm so sad, but glad that he is going out with an amazing season behind him.

Babies!

Carly had her baby last night...another sweet little boy named Sullivan, or Sully (how cute is that?) She ended up having a c-section, her labor was very similar to mine, she just stuck it out a little longer than I did, trying to avoid the section, but it turns out it was going to happen anyway. The cord was wrapped around Sully's neck - 3 times! Yikes! My c-section was ineveitable too, Luke's head was wedged in one of my pelvic bones and the cord was wrapped around his ankle. I talked to Carly this morning and she is doing great and so happy to have her little peanut here! We are so thankful that Sully is healthy and here safely. I'm sad that it will be a few months before I can cuddle with him and give my friend a hug.

For Parents

My friend sent me this in an email and I thought it was so beautifuly written that I had to share it. This is something I need to read every day!

FOR PARENTS
by Anna Quindlen

All my babies are gone now. I say this not in sorrow but in disbelief. I take great satisfaction in what I have today: three almost-adults, two taller than I am, one closing in fast.

Three people who read the same books I do and have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want to keep their doors closed more than I like.? Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by themselves.

Like the trick soap I bought for the bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby is buried deep within each, barely discernible except through the unreliable haze of the past. Everything in all the books I once pored over is finished for me now. Penelope Leach., T. Berry Brazelton., Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and sleeping through the night and early childhood education, all grown obsolete. Along with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I suspect that if you flipped the pages dust would rise like memories..

What those books taught me, finally, and what the women on the playground taught me, and the well-meaning relations --what they taught me, was that they couldn't really teach me very much at all.. Raising children is presented at first as a true-false test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far along, you realize that it is an endless essay.

No one knows anything.

One child responds well to positive reinforcement, another can be managed only with a stern voice and a timeout. One child is toilet trained at 3, his sibling at 2.

When my first child was born, parents were told to put baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on his own spit-up. By the time my last arrived, babies were put down on their backs because of research on sudden infant death syndrome. To a new parent this ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then soothing.

Eventually you must learn to trust yourself.

Eventually the research will follow.

I remember 15 years ago poring over one of Dr. Brazelton's wonderful books on child development, in which he describes three different sorts of infants: average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month old who did not walk.

Was there something wrong with his fat little legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically challenged? Was I insane? Last year he went to China. Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine. He can walk, too.

Every part of raising children is humbling, too. Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been enshrined in the, "Remember-When-Mom-Did Hall of Fame." The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language, mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed. The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, "What did you get wrong?". (She insisted I include that.) The time I ordered food at the McDonald's drive-through speaker and then drove away without picking it up from the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two seasons. What was I thinking? But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs.

There is one picture of the three of them, sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.

Even today I'm not sure what worked and what didn't, what was me and what was simply life. When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I'd done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be.

The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense, matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top. And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world, who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That's what the books never told me. I was bound and determined to learn from the experts.

It just took me a while to figure out who the experts were.

Two Weeks Old!

Here are some new pictures of my little two week old. He is such a little sweetie and we are just eating him up. I know first hand how quickly they grow out of this sweet little newborn phase, so I'm trying to enjoy every moment, every cuddle, every stretch, every yawn, every cry. I know it will be gone in the blink of an eye. The middle of the night feedings and little sleep don't seem as hard this time around. It's hard to get out of bed, but once I've got him in my arms, feeding him, I can't help but marvel at the precious gift of life that the Lord has blessed us with.

Tonight, when I was feeding Luke, Sam and Gabe were running around the living room getting the bad guys and simply being boys, I was amazed at that fact that I'm now a mom of three boys. It seems unreal, can that really be true? How crazy is that? I have three (THREE) boys! What in the world? In a few years, my grocery bill is going to be out of this world, my car and house will stink of sweaty boy smells, and I'll be driving all over the place to drop them off at their various activities. So much to look forward to and so much to soak in right now. I pray that I will find joy in all three of my boys each day and that I will know how to mother each of their sweet little hearts.

Can you say obsessive?

I'm so obsessed with Photoshop Elements. I'm going to go cross-eyed from all the time I spend in front of this computer staring at the screen. I'm having so much fun though! I'm actually going to make it to bed before midnight tonight. Yes, my new obsession has kept me up well into the night. I need something to be obsessed with this last bit of pregnancy!

Chili Recipe?

Thanks for all your tips on party favors. I like the idea of making cute cookies, so I might try that. If I don't get up the energy to do that, I think I'll buy each kid a candy bar or a book.

Now...I'm looking for a good Chili recipe. I have one for Cinncinati Chili that we make every year and I'm getting sick of it. I'm looking for a good, old fashioned Chili recipe...does anyone have one? If you do, email it to me at ldwatson24@comcast.net or leave it in comments, if you can.

Thanks!

Calling all Moms...

Sam's birthday party is coming up in two weeks and I need party favor ideas from all of you. What are some cool things that you've seen at the many birthday parties you have attended? It will be both boys and girls and we really don't have a theme. It's at Pump It Up, so I'm obviously looking for something inexpensive, but thoughtful. Ideas???

Gift Ideas

We've done gift ideas for kids...

Now I need gift ideas for adults...friends, husbands, parents, in-laws, brothers, sisters...

What is something you really want for Christmas (that's affordable!)

What's the best gift you've ever gotten?

Comment, comment, comment!!!

Things I'm Thankful for...

*My husband Neal, who...loves me, loves the Lord, takes me seriously, honors me, cherishes me, takes me and my feelings into account, protects our family, loves our boys, finds joy in being with us, provides for us, doesn't let anyone get away with messing with me, puts in wood floors in our kitchen, adds closets to rooms, drywalls said closets when he hates drywalling, finishes what he starts, always does what he says he is going to do, can figure out how to do anything, can figure out the answer to anything, is very smart, is open to changes, is very self-aware...I could go on and on. I love him and he makes my life safe and rich.
*My boys, of course. I'm about to have 3 of them. They are jewels, gifts, blessings, a delight. They fill my heart.
*My parents. Their support, consistency, example of Christ, example of a Godly marriage, their love for me and my family, their prayers for me and my family.
*My family. Even though they are far away....
*My friends. Who listen to me, pray for me, love me and want to hang out with me in spite of my flaws and annoying little tendencies, and who blog with me!
*My Nashville family. That the Lord brought us to this far away place knowing nobody, and now we have people to spend holidays with when we can't be with our family, we have friends to call on in a second if we need something, we have dear friendships here.
*My church. We are so blessed with a wonderful church, and a wonderful Community Group (who fall into the above category)
*Target. What's not to be thankful for when you think of Target?
*Fall in Nashville, the view outside my kitchen window is beautiful with the leaves on the trees changing and falling.
*A nice, hot, bubble bath with a good book.
*Neal's job and that he loves what he does.
*Chocolate chip cookies
*Dr. Pepper (I can't wait to have a DP from Sonic after I have Luke in January! I've already requested one to be brought to me in the hospital)
*Soup, specifically Chicken Tortilla and Potato.
*Our old quilt and our fleece Green Bay Packers blanket that I cover up with on the couch at night or when one of us is sick.
*TiVo
*My MAC studio fix powder
*My house with it's new wood floors!
*Quiet moments at home when Sam and Gabe are playing together nicely.
*That Sam and Gabe love to play together nicely!
*Chap stick
*My laptop
*My "Mom's Agenda" Calendar.
*Payday
*Jesus. I'll just sum this one up with that name in itself, if it weren't for Him, I would have nothing to be thankful for. I'm most thankful for the ways that He reveals His glory in my life and that He loves me in a way that is incomprehensible.

I could come up with more, but decided I had to have a stopping point. My sister-in-law, Laura, did this on her blog and asked this question of all her blog readers, and I will do the same...

What are you thankful for?

Kids Artwork

I need some ideas on storing all the pages of art projects that the boys come home with every week. I've taken out some of my favorites to display in their room and on the fridge, but can't find a good system for storing the rest...ideas? tips?

Fun and Free

Go check out Carly's blog and give some ideas of some fun, free stuff that you do with your kiddos.

So You Think You can Dance

(that is the longest title ever)

Kandice, Julie, Nicole and I had so much fun last night at the SYTYCD tour. We went to dinner at Sunset Grill and had yummy crab cakes and delicious creme brulee. Then we went on to the show. We were surprised at the number of guys we saw and surprised that we weren't the only 30ish year olds there. It was an awesome show, they did all our favorite dances and some new ones too. I wanted to get a picture of the four of us, but we never had a camera at the right time. My belly picture on the post below was right before we left. It was fun getting dressed up for a night out on the town and I got to wear my favorite cowboy boots for the first time this season. I love them...it's probably bad to love boots this much, but I do. When I first got them, I wore them around the house and made Neal talk to me about how awesome they are. I should have taken a picture of the boots!
